There are two different ways that a turntable moves; belt drive or direct drive. Belt drive works off a motor that is separate, the belt acts as shock absorber. DJs tend to use the direct drive more, they can manipulate the record by spinning it backwards or forward.

Turntables can also manual or automatic. Manual turntables requires the user to place the arm on the correct part of the record grove and remove the arm when finished. Automatic turntables will automatically place the arm in the groove with a press of a button and remove the arm by itself when the record is finished.
